DJ’s J. Period and G. Brown are paying tribute to the late Notorious B.I.G. with a new mixtape and an invitation only tribute event tonight (May 21), on what would have been the legendary rapper’s 36th birthday.

The DJ’s have assembled the second installment of their critically acclaimed March 9 remix project mixtape series, which is dedicated to Notorious B.I.G., who was gunned down March 9, 1997 in Los Angeles.

While the first March 9 installment focused on the darker side of B.I.G.‘s character on March 9 V.2., the DJ’s explore B.I.G.’s high-rolling, player lifestyle.

The DJ’s will showcase classics and remixes from the March 9 V.2. mixtape during the evening, which will dedicate a portion of the proceeds to the Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation.

As the hype continues to build towards Lil Wayne’s upcoming The Carter III, the accolades continue to come for Weezy as well.

Rolling Stone recently named Wayne “Best MC” in their Best of Rock 2008 issue. While it may be no surprise to many, it is what a Wayne guest appearance goes for these days that may shock people.
According to the feature, a verse from Weezy goes for $100k on average. The lowest Wayne will go to serve a hot sixteen? $75k.

"But nothing less!" Wayne says to the mag. "I wouldn't do a song for my sister for less than $75,000."

In the meanwhile, Wayne’s album is now staring at a June release date. The reason for the delay seems to be that Wayne is still recording new material. He also has been learning to play guitar (he recently played on Enrique Inglesias’ “Push”) and taking online classes at the University of Phoenix for a psychology degree.

Lil Wayne's The Carter III is due out June 10th on Universal/Cash Money.

In celebration of the release's 25th anniversary, Epic/Legacy is revisiting it with a deluxe edition containing unreleased bonus tracks mixed by or featuring Kanye West, Akon, Will.I.Am and Jackson himself. Thriller was originally released November 30, 1982, and the new 25th Anniversary Edition, dropping February 12, will have eight extra cuts: a fresh Kanye remix of "Billie Jean"; Akon and Will.I.Am's new take on "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' "; "The Girl Is Mine" and "P.Y.T." remixes by Will.I.Am; the rare unissued song "For All Time," a track from the original recording sessions that has been newly mixed and mastered by MJ; "Someone in the Dark"; "Carousel"; and the original "Billie Jean" demo. Michael Jackson Opens Up 25 Years After Thriller About The Classic LP ... And This Whole Hip-Hop Thing

'The rap thing, that is happening now,' superstar tells Ebony magazine; he also heaps praise on Ne-Yo, Chris Brown, Akon.

There is no question that Michael Jackson's music speaks for itself. But since the reclusive singer's acquittal on child-molestation charges in June 2005 and his subsequent move overseas, he's shied away from the public even more, withdrawing into a succession of revolving associates and advisers.

But with this month marking the 25th anniversary of Jackson's landmark album, Thriller, the King of Pop granted Ebony an exclusive interview for the magazine's December issue, in which the singer recalled how he was inspired by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, how hip-hop has evolved since its inception and Quincy Jones' unusual nickname for him. The magazine hits newsstands Monday.

"Quincy calls me a nickname: 'Smelly,' " Jackson told the mag. "Back then, especially back then — I say a few swear words now — but especially then, you couldn't get me to swear. So I would say, That's a 'smelly' song. That would mean it's so great that you're engrossed in it. So [Jones] would call me Smelly."

Jackson noted how he met Jones while the two were both working on Motown Records founder Berry Gordy's film "The Wiz." According to MJ, he asked the jazz producer to recommend a musician to work with on his solo debut, and Jones hailed himself. The two collaborated on Jackson's Off the Wall, which spawned four top 10 hits and sold millions of copies. The former Jackson 5 frontman said in the interview, however, that he was unsatisfied with the album, but he retained Jones to work on the follow-up, Thriller, right away. Jackson wanted to put more of his heart and soul into an album, he said.

"[It was] a complete transition," he said of his mega-selling opus. "Ever since I was a little boy, I would study composition. And it was Tchaikovsky that influenced me the most. If you take an album like Nutcracker Suite, every song is a killer, every one. So I said to myself, 'Why can't there be a pop album where every [song is a killer]?'

"I do that same process with every song," he added later of the approach. "It's the melody, the melody is the most important. ... If the melody sounds good in my head, it's usually good when I do it."

Jackson also shared his thoughts on hip-hop. In the past, Jackson had collaborated with the likes of the Notorious B.I.G., Heavy D, and New Jack Swing producer Teddy Riley. At first, he didn't think the music was melodic enough to travel beyond the regions it was created in. He said it would take a more relaxed sound to carry the music worldwide, which it's certainly done since.

"The rap thing, that is happening now." Jackson said. "When it came out, I always felt that it was gonna take more of a melodic structure to make it more universal, 'cause not everybody speaks English. [He laughs.] And you are limited to your country. But when you can have a melody, and everybody can hum a melody, then that's when it became France, the Middle East, everywhere! All over the world now, 'cause they put that melodic, linear thread in there. You have to be able to hum it, from the farmer in Ireland to that lady who scrubs toilets in Harlem to anybody who can whistle to a child poppin' their fingers. You have to be able to hum it."

Jackson heaped praise on Ne-Yo, Chris Brown and Akon, as far as contemporary acts. The singer is long-rumored to be working with Kanye West and Will.I.Am on a comeback album slated to be released sometime in 2008. While Jackson said, "I'm writing a lot of stuff right now," and, "I'm in the studio, like, every day," he didn't reveal if and when a new LP would be coming.

Just five years ago, Sean "Diddy" Combs asked Busta Rhymes to "pass the Courvoisier." These days, it's all about the vodka.

The 37-year-old hip-hop mogul has inked a multiyear deal to develop the Ciroc vodka brand — one of Diageo PLC's superpremium lines — for a 50-50 share in the profits.

It's the latest agreement in which a celebrity is going beyond the typical endorser role to share in a brand's rise and fall, such as Jay-Z with Budweiser and 50 Cent with Vitamin Water.

Diageo said the agreement could be worth more than $100 million for Combs over the course of the deal, depending on how well the brand performs.

"It is not an endorsement deal," Combs told The Associated Press on Tuesday night. "This is something that will have my daily attention."

Combs said he wanted to work with Diageo because the company understood that "I'm not just a celebrity endorser, I'm a brand builder. I'm a luxury brand builder."

Combs said he will be responsible for everything from marketing the brand to deciding where to sell it, and will focus on attracting "movers and shakers" to the line.

"They're looking for something that tastes like their lifestyle," he said. "It's that trendsetter, that hipster, someone who's looking for luxury and looking for something better."

Combs already has his own perfume and clothing line, and serves as chief executive of record company Bad Boy Worldwide Entertainment.

"I can't overhype someone into loving vodka," he said. But once consumers actually taste Ciroc, "I think we can convert a lot of people."

Jay-Z, 50 Cent & Diddy Make Forbes 'Celebrity 100' List

Forbes recently revealed their annual Celebrity 100 list, naming the most wealthy celebrities of the year and for the first time, the magazine introduced a new category called Hip-Hop Impresarios.

Among the hip-hop alumni who made the list, Jay-Z was the man at the top of the totem pole, ranking in at no. 9 on the Power Rank chart, beating out the likes of Donald Trump , Howard Stern , Kobe Bryant and even Diddy and 50 Cent.

The mag reported that Jay-Z earned a whopping $83 million in 2006, thanks to the sale of his Rocawear clothing line for a reported $204 million to Iconix. Other business ventures in his portfolio includes a small stake in NBA team, the New Jersey Nets, and two locations for this 40/40 nightclubs.

Jay-Z also ranked at no. 7 in Pay Rank.

50 Cent slided in at no. 32, with reported earnings of $33 million from his vast empire that includes a record label, clothing line, books, ringtones and videogames. His stake in Glaceau was also mentioned, but will count toward next year's rankings.

The rapper owned a 10% stake in the company, which was recently bought by Coca-Cola for a reported $4.1 billion, earning the rapper an estimated $100 million in the deal.

50 Cent also ranked at no. 26 in Pay Rank.

Bad Boy Records co-founder, Sean "Diddy" Combs, was positioned at no. 43, as Forbes reported his earnings in 2006 at $23 million, due to his Warner-backed Bad Boy Records, Sean John clothing line and Unforgivable cologne label. He landed at no. 55 in the Pay Rank list.

Others on the list included Will Smith at no. 57 with earnings of $31 million, Kobe Bryant at no. 23 with earnings of $33 million, Shaquille O'Neal at no. 25 with earnings of $32 million, Lebron James at no. 48 with earnings of $27 million, and Tyra Banks at no. 61 with earnings of $18 million among others.

Oprah Winfrey topped the list though with Tiger Woods right behind her. They had reported earnings of $260 million and $100 million respectively.

In addition to taking second, Woods also set a record, becoming the first athlete in history to earn $100 million in one year, thanks in part to a raise given by longtime endorser Nike, according to Forbes.

The power rankings were based on each celebrity's rankings in pay, presence on the web, press and TV.

Nine Inch Nails music' "Year Zero" enters The Billboard 200 chart at No. 2 on sales of 187,000 copies, pushing last week's No. 1 album, the "NOW 23" hits compilation, to No. 3. Billboard bases its album chart on Nielsen SoundScan retail-sales data.
